Located in the 2nd arrondissement, this apartment puts you within easy reach of the Palais Royal and Opéra Garnier – yet it faces inward over a quiet courtyard, so the buzz of central Paris stays outside. The interiors draw on a family history of horse breeding, with equestrian photographs and antiques sourced from the founding family's historic homes giving the place a distinct, lived-in personality. A reading nook framed by bookshelves makes for a proper retreat after a day on your feet, and boulangeries, restaurants, and a supermarket are all close by when hunger strikes.

Home truths:
* At 35 square metres, this is a compact apartment – well suited to a couple or two guests travelling together, and cosy but manageable for four.
* At full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. The only full bathroom here is the en-suite off the bedroom. While guests sleeping on the sofa bed have access to a separate toilet, they'll need to use the bedroom's en-suite for showering.
* As is common in France, the toilet is separate from the bathroom.
* Well-behaved pets are welcome to accompany you during your stay.
* The apartment is on the second floor and there is no lift.
* If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair – worth requesting in advance to make sure everything is set up on arrival.
* You won't find an oven here – though there is a hob. We think the kitchen is better suited to prepping lighter bites than large meals.
