The village of Grosmont developed largely thanks to the discovery of ironstone in the 1830s, when George Stephenson’s original railway from Whitby to Pickering was being built. The iron mines may be long gone, but the railway continues to dominate, with services via both the North York Moors Railway and the Esk Valley Railway providing fuss-free travel to the surrounding countryside and nearby coast.
