Perched above a valley in Lunigiana – the so-called Land of a Hundred Castles – this villa commands sweeping views across forested hillsides to the medieval Castello di Castiglione del Terziere. Outside, the infinity pool makes the most of the panoramas. A wisteria-draped pergola and an alfresco dining table are ideal for meals and sundowners, while inside, oak beams lend the living spaces real character. A games room with a billiard table adds a layer of relaxed comfort, and each bedroom opens to the outdoors. Surrounded by chestnut woodland and centuries-old olive trees, the grounds alone are worth exploring. But further afield, Pisa, Lucca, and the beaches of Lerici and Marina di Massa are perfect for day trips.

* The pool is open from the last Saturday in April to the first Saturday in October – if you're visiting outside those dates, you won't be able to use it.
* Each floor connects directly to the outside as well as via an internal staircase, so the layout feels open and spread across the hillside.
* If you're travelling with little ones, your host can arrange a cot and high chair. You'll need to request them in advance.
* You'll need a car to make the most of this hillside location. The villa sits in a rural area of Lunigiana, with the coast and local towns a drive away. There's a covered garage with two parking spaces, plus more space on the driveway.
