Perched on the bluff in Bird Rock, this Spanish-style home sits directly above the Pacific. Here, waves break below you, while the open ocean stretches as far as you can see. Two terraces, one on each level, make it near-impossible to stay inside at sunset, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors mean the sea breeze follows you indoors. Our favourite spot? The main bedroom, which opens straight onto the upper terrace. A five-minute walk brings you to Bird Rock's cafes and restaurants, with La Jolla Cove and its sea caves just a few miles up the coast.

* The main bedroom also has a sofa bed, giving you a flexible sleeping option if your group needs it – please mention this to your host when you book.
* The villa sits on an oceanfront bluff rather than directly on the sand, so you won't be able to step straight onto the beach from here. Sandy beaches and parks are close by – La Jolla Shores and Pacific Beach are both within a few miles.
* You'll need a car to reach most San Diego attractions. The garage fits two small to mid-size cars, and street parking is also available nearby – check local signage when you arrive.
* Your host provides complimentary beach chairs, an umbrella, a wagon, and beach towels.
* The lead guest must be at least 25 years old.
