The Old Keep

A 15th-century château set among the rolling hills of Lot-et-Garonne, this villa wears its age well – stone spiral staircases, immense fireplaces, and original terracotta floors give each room a depth that no amount of renovation can manufacture. The principal bedroom sits within the castle keep itself, while a four-poster bed graces another room, and the kitchen-diner opens onto the rear garden through French windows. Outside, the heated pool looks out over undulating countryside, and a full-size tennis court with a summer house gives younger guests plenty to do. Beauville's medieval bastide village is within easy reach when you're ready to explore.

Home truths:
* The grounds are on varying levels with low stone walls, uneven stone steps, and terraced areas – worth keeping in mind if you're travelling with younger children, who will need supervision outdoors.
* There's no ground floor bedroom or bathroom here – it may not suit guests with reduced mobility.
* If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair. You'll need to request them in advance.
* While the home can sleep up to eleven people, the maximum occupancy is ten guests.
* Air conditioning is only available in the kitchen/diner.
* The fourth bedroom leads directly into a separate single bedroom - we think this setup is best suited to a small family.
