Description Salario Sun: Roma

Opposite Porta Pia – a four-minute walk from Michelangelo's monumental gate – this apartment in a 19th-century building offers one of central Rome's rarer pleasures: a fifty square metre south-facing terrace where you can spend a long afternoon in the sun without going anywhere. The living room opens straight onto it, making the terrace feel like a natural extension of the home rather than an afterthought. Inside, the building's historic bones sit alongside modern touches, and the Borghese Gallery is an easy twenty-one-minute walk when you're ready to head out into the city.

Home truths:
* The apartment is on the first floor of a building with no lift, so you'll be carrying luggage up a flight of stairs on arrival and departure.
* The apartment sits on a main road, and several guests noted street noise from traffic at night – worth packing earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
* If you're travelling with a baby or toddler, your host can provide a cot and high chair on request – just give a couple of days' notice so everything is ready for your arrival.
