The historic building sets a theatrical mood from the moment you arrive, and though there's lively stretch of traditional Roman restaurants just outside the door, you might decide to eat in in the whitewashed interiors. The centre of Rome is also easily reachable either on-foot or with nearby public transport – so you can consider this an effortless city base.

* The apartment is on the third floor of a historic building with no lift, so you'll be carrying luggage up several flights of stairs on arrival and departure. It's worth packing light if you can.
