Description Beams & Beat Poets: New York

Few lofts carry as much history as this one – the building began life as a canning factory in 1876, later served as a firetruck depot, and became a hub for Beat poetry readings and the Gay and Lesbian Liberation Front. The soaring 15-foot wooden beam ceilings, exposed brick, and living plants – including a rubber tree over sixty-five years old – give the space a warmth that feels lived-in rather than staged. Washington Square Park is a five-minute walk, Christopher Street nine minutes on foot, and the W 4th St subway puts the rest of the city within easy reach.

Home truths:
* The fifth bedroom doubles up as an office space and has a single bed – worth knowing when deciding who sleeps where.
* For some stays, your host may ask you to help with light plant care – watering the pothos vines and indoor trees during your time here.
* Street parking is free and more available than you might expect in this part of Manhattan, and there's a parking garage right next door with EV charging if you need a guaranteed spot.
