Tucked into the maritime forest of Kiawah Island's private Vanderhorst Plantation, this elevated home has a quality that's hard to shake – the sense that the outside world is very far away. A saltwater pool sits at the heart of it, ringed by mature trees that make dusk swims feel properly secluded. Floor-to-ceiling windows keep things anchored to the forest view, while a screened porch is ideal for evening cocktails as the light drops. Five public golf courses, including the celebrated Ocean Course, are within easy reach when you're ready to venture out.

Home truths:
* At full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the loft area.
* The saltwater pool cannot be heated, so a dip will depend on the weather and time of year. Plan accordingly if you're visiting outside the warmest months.
* You'll need to climb steps to the front door here. It might not be the best option for those with reduced mobility.
* Parking is available for up to four cars, including in the garage. The garage space can be tight, so if you're bringing a larger vehicle, a standard saloon or compact SUV will be the easier fit. The beach is a short ride away, so renting bikes on arrival is a smart move.
* The fireplace is not available for guest use.
* You'll arrive to a starter supply of toilet paper, paper towels, and a one-day coffee kit – but these aren't replenished during your stay, so a grocery run early on is a good idea. Perishables, cooking oils, and seasonings are not provided either.
