Location

Ilfracombe is a vibrant Victorian seaside town on the dramatic North Devon coast, with a working harbour, stunning cliff scenery, and a thriving arts and food scene.

The town is one of the most striking on the North Devon coast, set among steep, wooded hillsides that tumble down to a natural harbour. Ilfracombe has been welcoming visitors since the Victorian era and retains much of its period character, with handsome terraces, elegant hotels, and ornate public buildings. In recent years a growing creative and culinary culture has brought new energy to the town, anchored by Damien Hirst's towering 20-metre bronze statue 'Verity', which stands guard at the harbour entrance.

The Harbour and Town

Ilfracombe's working harbour remains the heart of the town. Fishing boats and pleasure craft share the quayside, and in summer the harbour is the departure point for the ferry to Lundy Island, a unique nature reserve in the Bristol Channel. From the harbour, the High Street climbs through the town centre, lined with independent shops, galleries, cafes, and restaurants. The Landmark Theatre, with its striking conical white architecture, sits on the seafront and hosts a regular programme of live performances, cinema, and exhibitions.

Tunnels Beaches

One of Ilfracombe's most celebrated attractions is Tunnels Beaches, where a series of tunnels were hand-carved through the cliff by Welsh miners in the 1820s to create access to sheltered bathing beaches below. The site includes a large tidal bathing pool, rock pools to explore, and a dramatic setting for events and weddings. An entrance fee applies.

Nearby

Ilfracombe sits between Woolacombe, approximately 6 miles to the west, with its 3-mile stretch of golden sand, and Combe Martin, approximately 4 miles to the east, the gateway to Exmoor National Park. The surrounding coastline is part of the South West Coast Path and offers some of the most spectacular walking in Devon.
