Located within the moat of Fort Redoubt, a Palmerston fort constructed in 1856 as a response to the threat of possible invasion by the French under Emperor Louis Napoleon, the caponiers were built to be the barrack accommodation for 24 soldiers.
with its iron window shutters and rifle slots, the caponiers also provided a means of ditch defence, these original features can still be found following a sympathetic renovation by the owner to this derelict building, creating wonderful holiday accommodation in keeping with its historical value. It makes for a great base for the family to explore the delights the Isle of Wight has to offer.
