By the Tide

Six metres from the water's edge in the Cornish village of Flushing, this Edwardian cottage puts you as close to the harbour as you can get without getting your feet wet. A log burner anchors the living and dining area for cooler evenings, while the top-floor bedroom looks out across the water to Falmouth – and the ferry to get you there departs just a two-minute walk away. Two kayaks are ready to launch from the village slipway, three pubs are around the corner, and a private decked courtyard out back is perfect for a slow breakfast among the flower beds.

* The staircase up to the top floor is steep, with a low beam at the entrance – your host notes it may be unsuitable for some guests.
