Step outside and Nelson's Monument is practically at arm's length, with panoramic views across the city in every direction. The Royal Mile, Scott Monument, and Edinburgh Castle are all within easy reach on foot – provided you're happy to tackle a few hills along the way.

The area quietens considerably once the site closes in the evening.
* Getting here involves a steep uphill climb with steps – it's not suitable if you or anyone in your group has mobility issues, and arriving with heavy luggage takes some effort. There are two flights of stairs inside, and steps lead to the front door of the ground-floor apartment.
