Few homes in Athens put you this close to the Acropolis – and fewer still let you dine on a private rooftop with the Parthenon glowing opposite as the city settles into night. The architect-designed interiors are calm and considered, with a living room that frames the same view by day, and a freestanding stone tub in the spa-style bathroom for when you need to slow down. Downstairs, a patio is ideal for alfresco breakfasts before heading out – the Acropolis itself, Thissio's cafe-lined streets, and most of central Athens are all within easy walking distance.

Home truths:
* The villa sits within a historic pedestrian area, so taxis and ride-shares may not be able to drop you directly at the door. If you're arriving with luggage, be prepared for a short walk along cobbled streets.
* If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a cot and high chair. You'll need to request them in advance.
* The living room and kitchen sit on the upper level of the villa, with bedrooms below. You'll find yourself moving between floors regularly – it may not suite those with mobility concerns. The stairs are also without railings so little ones will need to be supervised.
