What better way to experience this swanky London neighbourhood than a stay in a typical Kensington townhouse? This red-brick abode sits just outside the sprawling greenery of Kensington Gardens – ideally located for morning walks to adjoining Hyde Park and onwards to Buckingham Palace. Those that want to get their culture fix can make the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the V&A and Natural History Museum. The living room is like an intellectual’s study – lined with books on dark wood shelves and a charming herringbone floor underfoot. It opens up to the dining area, which is flooded with natural light thanks to glass sliding doors opening up to the private garden. Out here, you’ve got an outdoor lounge area, barbecue and hanging chair. If the sun doesn’t make an appearance, the kitchen inside has everything you need to cook up a group meal. Each bedroom has its own bathroom, and we were taken with some of the tub and shower set-ups – our favourites were the deep soaking tubs like tin cowboy baths and a striking circular shower.

Local guide
About Kensington
Affluent and incredibly central, Kensington is a great base for exploring London on foot. Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park are on your doorstep and so are the Victoria and Albert, Science, and Natural History Museums. The streets are attractive and well maintained (grand, white stucco facades aplenty) and your neighbours will be a wealthy, conservative set. Lots of positives but probably not the place to let your hair down.
