Avoid the crowds with a stay at this gorgeous chalet in the Styrian Alps. Located in the under-the-radar resort of Hohentauern, which dates all the way to the late 1940s, this historic ski area is served by just five lifts (one of which is just 200m from the chalet). However, it boasts an impressive 550m descent and 8 miles of immaculately groomed pistes with terrain to suit all abilities, ranging from complete beginners up to seasoned pros. Inside, the chalet offers three charming wooden-clad bedrooms for up to six guests. Two of them enjoy direct access to a balcony that offers unparalleled access to awe-inspiring mountain views and crisp high-altitude air. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room also ensure spectacular mountain vistas from the living room, plus access to a wooden deck adorned with outdoor furniture. There's little better than returning from a day on the slopes, slipping your boots onto the heaters for maximum comfort the following morning, and enjoying a sauna session, followed by a cosy evening in front of the fire. Preparing family feasts is a breeze thanks to the well-equipped kitchen, and thanks to all the outdoor activity, you can guiltlessly tuck into all the food that finds its way onto your plate. However, Hohentauern isn't just a winter destination. As soon as the snow begins to melt, hikers and bikers take to the trails that start right at the front door. While those who prefer their activities a little more on the sedate side can visit the many lakes and thermal baths that the area is known for.
