Tucked into the pine forest above North Lake Tahoe, this cabin is the kind of place where a wood-burning fireplace and mountain air make evenings feel unhurried. The upper deck seats eight for dinner under the trees, with forest and valley views stretching out beyond the railing – a hard spot to leave once you've settled in. Northstar Ski Resort is a nine-minute drive away via Highway 267, Kings Beach is about seven minutes, and the Brockway Summit Trailhead is 2.6 miles from the front door, putting the whole region within easy reach.

Home truths:
* Due to this home's location, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay. Parking for four cars is available on the premises.
* If you're planning a winter visit, four-wheel drive or snow chains may be necessary to reach the home safely. Factor that in when arranging your vehicle.
* The barbecue on the upper deck is a seasonal Weber gas grill, available during summer months only. If you're visiting in winter or spring, you won't be able to use it – and note that charcoal grills are strictly forbidden in this county.
* The wood-burning fireplace requires guest-supplied firewood. You'll be able to pick some up locally before you arrive.
* There's no air conditioning here. Ceiling fans are available, and the forested setting provides some natural shade.
* One of the bedrooms has a single-over-double bunk bed. We think it's better suited to children.
