The main living area is its most striking room – a cabinet of curiosities with high ceilings, ornate cornicing, and a taxidermy peacock perched on its console. Soundproofed windows mean the lively street stays outside. And when you're ready to see the sights, Galerie Vivienne, Palais Royal, and Opéra Garnier are all within a fifteen-minute walk.

Home truths:
* There's no lift in the building, so you'll be carrying luggage up and down the stairs to the second floor on arrival and departure.
* You won't find an oven here – though there is a hob. We think the kitchen is better suited to prepping lighter bites than large meals.
