Ten acres of private Alentejo land, no neighbours in sight, and a lake where wildlife passes by at its own pace – this villa earns its seclusion. The glass-walled living areas dissolve the boundary between inside and out, with countryside stretching as far as you can see and golden light shifting across the landscape as the day winds down. A yoga platform overlooks the lake, the heated pool is ringed with space to do nothing in particular, and Comporta Beach is a forty-eight-minute drive when you need the Atlantic.

Home truths:
* Due to this home's location, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay. Parking is open-air and on-site rather than in a garage or covered structure – fine for most vehicles, but worth knowing if you're arriving in strong summer sun.
* At full occupancy, one child will sleep on a rollaway bed. You'll need to request this in advance.
* Housekeeping is provided for two hours daily except for Sunday. Bed linen and towels will be changed every seven days.
* While not all bathrooms have been photographed, expect the style and quality to be consistent with the rest of the home.
