It's a comfortable base for two, with a clever layout that makes the most of the space. The location makes a strong case of its own, too. Both Princes Street and George Street – home to restaurants and cocktail bars – are a five-minute walk away, and the Royal Mile is roughly fifteen minutes on foot. Calton Hill, with its sweeping city panoramas, is the same distance away.

Home truths:
* At full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the living area. Since it's a studio, we'd suggest a maximum guest count of two – though the clever layout does make the living space feel separate from the bedroom.
* You won't find an oven here – though there is a hob. We think the kitchen is better suited to prepping lighter bites than large meals.
* You'll arrive via a spiral staircase to the first floor, with steps that are on the narrow side – worth keeping in mind if you're arriving with larger bags or a pushchair.
* There's a clothing rail instead of a proper wardrobe, so we'd recommend packing light.
* Given the home's central spot, expect to hear some street noise throughout your stay.
* Entry to the building uses an online key system accessed via your phone, so make sure your device is charged before you head out for the day.
* Please note that construction on a neighbouring building is currently underway and may result in some daytime noise.
