Inside, the place is pared-back yet comfortable and well-appointed for both couples and solo travellers. Down on the street, the neighbourhood more than holds its own – Philopappos Hill rises immediately behind the building, the Acropolis is a twelve-minute walk, and the cafes and tavernas of Koukaki keep things lively without the tourist crowds of Plaka.

* The apartment sits on the fourth floor, reached by lift and then a short flight of stairs. If you or anyone in your group has limited mobility, it's worth factoring in that final climb.
* You won't find an oven here – though there is a hob. We think the kitchen is better suited to prepping lighter bites than large meals.
